Tualatin is a stop on the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail, and there are several Ice Age features you can find around town, including:
Tualatin Public Library (www.tualatinoregon.gov/library) – The library features a striking display of a partial mastodon skeleton, as well as other Ice Age fossils including the sacrum of a giant ground sloth, mammoth bones, and bones from other animals, plus small erratics and replicas of an ancient bison skull, mastodon tooth, and mastodon tusk. The library is Tualatin’s interim visitor’s center for the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail, and visitors can get their National Parks Service passport stamped there.
Tualatin River Greenway Trail (www.tualatinoregon.gov/recreation/tualatin-river-greenway-trail) – Located along the Tualatin River and adjacent to the library, the trail features a geologic timeline that incorporates the Ice Age floods, plus erratics, replicas of fossils, and interpretive signage. A life-size bronze mastodon sculpture can be found at the nearby shopping center.
Tualatin Heritage Center (www.tualatinhistory.org) – Home of the Tualatin Historical Society, the Heritage Center has several erratics on-site, artifacts from Native Americans, and megafauna bones including mastodon and giant sloth.
Tualatin Commons (www.tualatinoregon.gov/recreation/tualatin-lake-commons) – Featuring several erratics on-site, the Commons evokes the Ice Age Floods through its wave-shaped railing and iceberg water fountains.
Ibach Park (www.tualatinoregon.gov/recreation/ibach-park) – Featuring an award-winning playground that translates history into an interactive educational play area, including representations of the Willamette Meteorite, Tualatin’s mastodon, cultural history, and geology.
Tonquin Scablands – Geologists have identified 14 flood channels throughout the area between Tualatin, Sherwood, and Wilsonville. The area also includes kolk ponds, created by whirlpools that scoured out areas.
Rolling Hills Current Ripples – Along Borland Road, a field across from Rolling Hills Church has several current ripples.
